Achim Krüger

Dr Achim Krüger is a Professor of Experimental Oncology and his research group represents the Experimental Oncology and Therapy Research section within the Institutes of Molecular Immunology and Experimental Oncology at the School of Medicine of the Technical University of Munich. Dr Krüger studies biology at the University of Konstanz, Germany and cell biology and virology at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook, U.S.A. He received his MSc (Diplom-Biologe) at the University of Konstanz (1991) and continued for his PhD thesis in the Tumor Immunology Division at the Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (dkfz, German Cancer Research Center) in Heidelberg, receiving his doctoral degree (Dr. rer. nat.) from the University of Heidelberg in 1994. He completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship of the Ontario Cancer Research Foundation and a Feodor-Lynen Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung from 1994-1997 under the supervision of Dr. Rama Khokha. In 1997 Dr. Krüger became head of a research group in the Dept of Gynecology at the School of Medicine at the Technical University of Munich and is principal investigator at the Institute of Experimental Oncology and Therapy Research at the School of Medicine at the Technical University of Munich since 2000. In 2006, Dr Krüger was appointed as Associate Professor of Experimental Oncology. In addition to his basic research interests, Dr Krüger is a passionate teacher of the lecture ‘Molecular Oncology’ and related seminars and internship courses for students of Biology, Molecular Biotechnology, and Nutrition&Biomedicine of the School of Life Sciences of the Technical University of Munich at Weihenstephan and of students of Biochemistry at the faculty of Chemistry of the Technical University of Munich at Garching. Dr Krüger is Editorial Board member of ‘Cancers’ and frequent Reviewer of numerous cancer-related high-ranked journals. He received several scientific awards, including the Young Investigator Award of the American Association for Cancer Research in 2001, for his discovery of liver metastasis-promoting effects of brad-spectrum metalloproteinase inhibitors. Dr Krüger participated in several European Framework Programmes (FP6, FP/) of the European Commission, as Work Package leader and has been continuously funded by grants from the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Bonn) over the past 25 years.
